North End
go joint top!
Leicester City 0-1 Preston North End
Paul Simpson’s North End went joint
top of the Championship after an excellent away win at the Walkers
Stadium.
The yellow army of around 2,000 Preston
fans made the journey to Leicester, looking to capitalise on
Cardiff’s loss to
QPR on Friday night. Paul Simpson brought in Patrick Agyemang to
replace Danny Dichio.
North End played out of their skin in the first half, playing
some really attractive football. After dominating the first 15
minutes of play, the deadlock was broken. The goal came from a
slick Preston counter attack.
The ball was played to Agyemang inside the
box, who flicked the ball into Sean St Ledger’s path.
Ledger struck the ball with his left foot, which came crashing
off the
post. Patrick Agyemang
was in the right place at the right time to poke the ball home
at the back post.
The North End faithful were sent into raptures.
The whole team celebrated in front of the travelling fans. North
End continued
to play some brilliant football, passing Leicester off the park.
The dominance couldn’t find a second goal in the first half.
The second half was slightly different. Simpson looked like he
wanted to settle for the 1-0, but still attack on the break. Leicester
only came into life in the last 10 minutes, putting Carlo Nash
under substantial pressure.
Paul Simpson rang the chances, Dichio, Ormerod and Neal replacing
Nugent, Agyemang and Whaley respectively. Carlo Nash showed his
worth in the final moments of the game. Nash pulled off two or
three excellent saves to keep Leicester at bay.
North End managed to hold on to the three points, to join Cardiff
as joint leaders of the Championship on 36 points from 18 games
played.
