Preston North End 1-0

Jon Parkin has given himself a tag, "super sub". The big striker came off the bench to repeat his heroics once again to hand North End the three points over Birmingham City. For the Second Saturday running the Sky Sports cameras was at Deepdale, 5.20 kick off against 2nd in the Championship.

Alan Irvine kept the same side that started in the win over Doncaster Rovers midweek, only Eddie Nolan coming in for Billy Jones who missed out with a torn calf. Jon Parkin, who scored the winner against Doncaster remained on the bench.

It was an open game, with both sides attacking from the start. Birmingham had the first effort on goal, Lee Carsley drilled a low shot for Lonergan to parry the ball away well. In form Ross Wallace had North End's first real chance, cutting in on the right onto his left foot to rifle the ball at goal, forcing Taylor to make a finger tipped save.

Callum Davidson went on a mazy run into the Birmingham half, the visitors defence stood off the left back who got a good shot away forcing Taylor to make another good save. The first half ended all square, tesitment to PNE's back line keeping goal poacher Kevin Phillips very quiet.

It was more of the same in the second half, Ross Wallace was again the key man creating the chances. North End continued to defend well, even Birmingham sub Cameron Jerome couldn't get past the impressive Mawene and St Ledger. With the game drawing to an end, Parkin was brought on for the labouring Chris Brown.

Parkin made an instant impact, almost giving North End the lead within five minutes. Paul McKenna whom had a cracking performance slid Parkin in, who was one on one with Maik Taylor. The big striker failed to get the ball from underneath his feet as the chance went begging past. The match looked to be heading for draw and an well earned point until the best stepped up to redeem himself.

North End picked the ball up in midfield, Hawley who came on for Stephen Elliott slid Wallace in down the left flank. Wallace ran onto the ball to ping a first time inch perfect cross to Jon Parkin. The former Stoke striker chested the ball down then poked the ball home from five yards to send Deepdale delirious!
