Mellor brace sinks Chesterfield

Preston North End2-0

A goal either side of half time for Neil Mellor gave North End their second win in four days. On the back of the fantastic win at Portman Road, Alan Irvine made a few changes to his team. Ross Wallace made his home debut, Darren Carter, Michael Hart and Karl Hawley made the starting eleven.

The match was rather dull to be fair, North End showing some good possession football. Mellor's first strike came after a good move, McKenna was involved once more. His pass set Wallace free down the left, who crossed in for Hawley. Hawley's header was saved by the Chesterfield keeper, only for Mellor to grab the rebound.

The second half was rather dull, Chesterfield played some good football, they deserved a goal. If they knew how to shoot, maybe they would have found the net. Lonergan made one or two good saves, who was only really tested once from a well worked free kick. Mellor wrapped the tie up in the final moment. Carter latched on to a through ball, to square the ball to Mellor whom duly tapped in for his brace.
