Why joining PNE was Beckham's best career move
By Andrew Greaves PRESTON CITIZEN
A book which looks at how David Beckham's career went from turning
out for Preston North End in front of 2,500 people to global stardom
is set to hit the shelves later this year.
Journalist and author Andrew Atkinson is now on the hunt for
pictures of the former England captain during his time at Deepdale,
in the
1994/95 season, so he can complete the book, entitled David Beckham
- In At the Deep End.
He said: "I've got a lot of things together including quotes
from David and some of his ex-Preston team-mates but I need some
photographs of him as a North End player to complete the book.
" I think it will be of
great interest, not just to North End fans, but also football
fans in general because David is such a big name."
Beckham played five times and scored twice for PNE.
His appearances included a game at Exeter City when just 2,504
people turned
up, a far cry from his days with Manchester United, Real Madrid
and
most recently LA Galaxy where he often performs in front of
crowds of 60,000 plus.
But despite
his modest North End career, Beckham has gone on record as saying
it was one of the best moves of his career. Beckham said: "Joining
Preston I felt my career was over at Manchester United. And that
left me gutted.
" But Sir Alex Ferguson assured me it wasn't the end of my United
days and on hindsight it's the best thing I've ever done in
my career, going to Deepdale."
Andrew said: "I have been in touch with former North End
favourite Gareth Ainsworth - and he is going to ge me an insight
of David
Beckham's time at Deepdale.
" Gareth is just one source that has contributed to the book, which
I'm very grateful for. However, I'm still looking for photographs,
or stories of his time at Preston."
